
German-Style Stewed Cucumbers
This traditional German dish features braised cucumbers gently stewed with onions, dill, and a touch of cream. Often served with ground meat or potatoes, Schmorgurken offer a surprisingly hearty and comforting flavor. A perfect way to use oversized garden cucumbers, this dish is light, savory, and full of classic home-cooked charm.

Ingredients
- 6 field cucumbers
- 1 onion
- 1–2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 100 g bacon diced
- dill fresh or dried
- 100 g crème fraîche
Instructions
- Dice the onions.
- Peel 6 field cucumbers, quarter them, remove the seeds, and cut into small cubes.
- Sauté the onions in oil.
- Add diced bacon and fry briefly.
- Add the cucumbers, season with 1 teaspoon of salt, and add chopped dill.
- Cover with a lid and braise over medium heat for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in 100 g of crème fraîche.
- Serve warm, ideally with boiled potatoes or similar side dishes.
